Author Interview:
1. Where is the current place you reside and can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I am 31 years old and live in Sydney, Australia. I love to dance, especially Ballroom and Latin - four pairs of ballroom shoes in my closet. Reading, going to the gym are my favourite leisure activities and spending time with my family and friends. My debut novel Mad About the Boy was released last year, a multicultural contemporary romance. Contemporary Romance, YA Fiction / Urban Fantasy / Paranormal Romance and Regency Historicals are all genres I write in. I love connecting with new people and doing interviews like these with great bloggers like Janina. I work as a fulltime Executive Assistant and part-time writer.
2. Have you always wanted to become a writer and who or what inspired you to become one?
Yes, from a very young age I enjoyed reading so much and just created stories. My 7th grade teacher gave me the best compliment for a story I wrote. I am passionate about entertaining people and writing is my art. It's my way to express myself creatively. Writing is in my bones, I've always known that being an author and writing novels would be a big part of my life. I've been writing since I was fourteen. A very nice rejection letter when I was seventeen from an Editor at Penguin Australia encouraged me to continue learning my craft. You read about the rejection on my website under Biography.
3. How old were you when you wrote your first book?
My first completed novel was finished when I was sixteen, I had several rejections but one rejection truly stood out for me. I had a very bad experience with a Vanity Press Publisher which cost me thousands of dollars and really scared me when it came to publishing. I was young at twenty-one and very enthusiastic to get my book out there. They went bankrupt shortly after and I was never going to recover my money. This scared me for a while, so I stopped writing for a few years until my Aunty Hilda and Uncle Wadih in Venezuela, also are big fans of mine, and encouraged me to continue to work hard and send out to publishers.
4. Do you take part in the designing of the cover of you book?
Yes I do! And this is the most fun part I think. I work with Kelly McDonald from Melbourne, she and I worked together with ideas to develop the cover for BaSatai: Outside In. She's wonderful and very patient with me, very creative, thorough and professional. I couldn't have asked for anyone better. She works with my ideas and advises what may and may not work. We first met on Facebook. I highly recommend her.
5. Do you have any bad habits that you do while reading?
Hmmm, I lose myself in the book and sometimes don't listen when someone is trying to get my attention but hey I'm reading can't help myself.
6. What is your favourite genre of books that you love the most?
I love anything based around romance but urban fantasy/paranormal and sci-fi hits my number one list to read and write, followed by contemporary and then regency.
7. Are you currently reading any books?
Yes I'm enjoying Halo by Alexandra Andornetto
8. Who are some of your favourite authors?
Richelle Mead, Charlaine Harris, Stephanie Meyer, Sophie Kinsella, Jane Austen, JK Rowling, Johanna Lindsey, Stephanie Laurens and Nora Roberts.
9. Do you have any advice for people who want to become writers?
Love what you do, learn your craft, don't write for money, certainly don't follow trends, write from the heart, use your imagination, network with friends, laugh lots, have a thick skin and don't lose your cool - not everyone is going to like your book (PS take both positive reviews with a cheer and negative reviews on the chin and be thankful that someone read your work)
10. Where will people be able to buy your book?
BaSatai: Outside In will be released on April 14th, 2012 available in Paperback and EBook at Amazon, Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble, Smashwords, Itunes, Sony, Diesal, Kobo, Createspace and Lightning Source.
